Vaginal Microbiome and Ph

When it comes to women’s health, one area that’s often overlooked but incredibly important is the delicate balance of the vaginal environment. As naturopaths, we understand that true wellness stems from honoring the body’s innate wisdom—including the complex ecosystem of the vaginal microbiome.

What Is Vaginal pH?

The vaginal pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline the vaginal environment is. It typically ranges between 3.5 and 4.5, which is slightly acidic. This acidic environment serves a protective function: it inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and supports the growth of beneficial microbes.

Meet the Vaginal Microbiome

The vaginal microbiome is a diverse community of microorganisms—primarily bacteria—that live in the vagina. The star of the show is the Lactobacillus species. These beneficial bacteria produce lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and other compounds that help maintain the acidic pH and prevent overgrowth of pathogenic organisms like Candida albicans or Gardnerella vaginalis.

When this microbial balance is disrupted, a condition known as dysbiosis can occur. This imbalance can lead to issues such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeast infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and even increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections.

What Causes Imbalances?

Several factors can disrupt vaginal pH and the microbiome:

  • Antibiotic use: While lifesaving, antibiotics often wipe out both harmful and beneficial bacteria.

  • Hormonal changes: Menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, and hormonal contraceptives can all affect the vaginal environment.

  • Douching and harsh products: Many over-the-counter feminine hygiene products disturb the natural pH and microbial balance.

  • Diet and lifestyle: High sugar intake, stress, lack of sleep, and poor gut health can all contribute to imbalances.

  • Unprotected sex: Semen has a higher pH and can temporarily alter the vaginal environment.

Naturopathic Support for a Healthy Vaginal Microbiome

As naturopaths, we aim to support the body’s natural ability to maintain balance. Here are holistic ways to promote optimal vaginal health:

1. Probiotic Support

Incorporating probiotics—especially strains like Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri—can help restore and maintain healthy vaginal flora. Look for supplements specifically formulated for women’s health. Under the guidance of some practitioners we can instruct on how to use these not only orally, but as pessaries also.

2. Diet Matters

A whole-foods diet rich in fiber, fermented foods, and low in refined sugars supports not only gut health but also vaginal microbiome balance. Include foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir.

3. Herbal Allies

Herbs such as garlic, goldenseal, calendula, and pau d’arco may offer antimicrobial support, while ashwagandha and rhodiola help reduce stress—a key factor in immune and microbial balance.

4. Avoid Irritants

Ditch douches, scented soaps, and synthetic underwear. Opt for cotton and use natural, unscented personal care products. I personally LOVE Boody bamboo underwear (I am not way affiliated or sponsored by them -- I WISH)

5. Support Hormonal Health

Balancing hormones naturally through dietary modification or herbal medicine (like vitex or black cohosh), and addressing thyroid or adrenal concerns can have a ripple effect on vaginal health.

When to Seek Support

While many imbalances can be managed naturopathically, recurring or severe symptoms should always be evaluated by a healthcare provider. Discharge with a strong odor, itching, irritation, or discomfort deserves prompt attention. If you are experiencing long or chronic symptoms or something just does not feel right, we can send away for a vaginal microbiome test. Get in touch to learn more!
